How Trivandrum Built India’s First Biomedical Innovation Ecosystem (1978–1995) | IISc Keynote

Описание: In this keynote delivered at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) during the International Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Deep-Tech Startups, I explore a remarkable and often overlooked story:

👉 How Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) became the cradle of India’s biomedical innovation ecosystem between 1978 and 1995.

At the heart of this transformation was the Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST)—a pioneering entrepreneurial institution that built world-class capabilities in medical devices, biomaterials, and translational research, long before “deep-tech startups” became a buzzword.

Drawing on my research (published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management), this talk unpacks:

How institutional vision and public leadership can catalyse innovation ecosystems
The role of mission-driven science in solving societal challenges
How India developed indigenous biomedical technologies under severe resource constraints
Lessons for today’s entrepreneurial universities and deep-tech founders
Why ecosystem building is as much about values, networks, and persistence as it is about funding

This story is also deeply personal. It emerges from my home city of Trivandrum, offering a lens into how local contexts in the Global South can shape globally relevant innovation models.
