So when you found a sealskin on the beach, your first thought was "what's this?" followed by "Oh cool, free sealskin." You assumed a fisherman had left it behind. It was a cold day so you picked it up and pulled it over your shoulders.
Unknowingly stumbling into a very complicated and magical tradition of the Selkies.
The rules are as follows. If a human takes a selkie's sealskin, they are legally married. If the human freely offers it back, that is a proposal. So if the human keeps it forever, that's forced marriage, and if they offer it back, the selkie gets to say either yes or no. That was the laws. When a Selkie wanted to get married, they would surrender their pelts to the sea and let the sea decide who received them.
You finding and picking up the sealskin had accidentally married the two of you. Of course you didn't know that. But you're about to know that.
