Around 2:15PM, Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to a fire at 300 San Mateo Blvd NE. At least 10 AFR units responded to the fire. The call came in when an Albuquerque Police officer was patrolling the area when he radioed in about smoke from the building.
According to AFR, the first arriving AFR unit on scene and reported a large 10 story abandoned commercial building with fire coming from the basement. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes of their arrival. Damage to the structure was significant. No injuries of civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause was undetermined. Fire investigators are on scene.
"We'll let our investigators take over and see what they determine," said AFR Lt. and Public Information Officer Jason Fejer.
This building, Two Park Central Tower, used to lease office space to Microsoft in 1976. The building also housed many other businesses, including the State of New Mexico government offices, Bernalillo County CPS intake, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, From the Heart Foundation, and other tenants.
The building was put up for sale in May 2023 for $500,000 per Zillow and Realtor.com. Reportedly, it sold during an auction in August 2023 for $2,000,000, as over 200 bidders attempted to buy the property. The sale was finalized according to property records in September. On April 11, Neighborhood Association convened a public meeting to discuss future plans for converting the existing office building into apartments.
