Explore the breathtaking beauty of Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden on Oahu, Hawaii in this 2026 cinematic walkthrough. Discover why this "peaceful refuge" is considered a must-visit destination for nature lovers and photographers visiting the Hawaiian islands.
In this video, we take a tour of the 400-acre tropical paradise nestled at the base of the majestic Koʻolau Mountains. We'll walk through global botanical collections featuring flora from the Philippines, Malaysia, Africa, and Polynesia.
💡Key highlights in this walkthrough:
The iconic entrance road with mountain views (note: stopping on the road is strictly prohibited for safety).
A peaceful stroll to the 32-acre lake, Loko I Maluia.
Lush rainforest trails and hidden picnic spots.
📍 Location: 45-680 Luluku Rd, Kāneʻohe, HI 96744
🎟️ Admission: Free
🕒 Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily (Closed Christmas & New Year's).
🕒 New for 2026: "Day of Rest" Closures
Starting January 8, 2026, Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden is closed every Thursday. This weekly "day of rest" allows the natural environment to rejuvenate and staff to perform maintenance. Plan your visit for any other day between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
🎣 Unique Activities
Weekend Fishing: Catch-and-release fishing is available at Loko Waimaluhia (the lake). Bamboo poles are provided for free on a first-come, first-served basis.
Note: You must use barbless hooks and white bread for bait.
Botanical Art: Free self-directed drawing and painting sessions are held every Tuesday from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Bring your own supplies like watercolors or pencils.
Camping: Weekend camping is available (Friday–Monday) but requires a permit booked at least two weeks in advance via the HNL Parks reservation portal.
👟 Practical Survival Tips
Footwear: Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty; trails are often extremely muddy, especially after typical windward rain showers.
Visitor Center First: Stop here to scan the QR code map. It is much easier to navigate the 400-acre loop once you see how the parking lots connect to the lake trails.
No Pets: Only service animals are permitted; household pets must stay home.
Wildlife: Look out for mongooses (slender, squirrel-like animals) and various tropical birds like egrets and bulbuls.
🚗 Parking & Driving
Speed Limits: The garden has a strict 15 mph speed limit throughout its 2.5-mile main road.
Parking Strategy: If the main Visitor Center lot is full, continue driving deeper into the garden. There are numerous designated parking areas like Kahua Nui-Makai and Kahua Lehua that offer easier access to scenic viewpoints and trails.
Safety Warning: Cones and signs now line the entry road to prevent people from stopping for "Instagram" photos; security strictly enforces this for safety.
