Описание: The White Mountains of Crete is a unique mountain range unlike any other in the world. At an altitude of 2000 meters they form an alpine dssert, with an otherworldly scenery. The terrain is dark full of dips, potholes and craters, while the mountaintops are strikingly white, because of the limestone. This unique geological formations create a trully incredible lunar landscape, that enchants any who will hike there.

Follow us on our journey to hike and explore the White Mountains of Crete. In the span of 20 episodes we will hike in the alpine desert, reach the most extraordinary peaks, visit their breathtaking gorges.

This is episode we hike to Kastro Summit at 2219 meters at the east part of the range. We go to Askyfou Plateau and then drive up the dirtroad,passing by Tavri plateau and reaching Niato plateau, the starting point of the hike. From Niato you can climb the rigdeline to reach Kastro Summit. Then you can easily hike to the neigbouring peaks of Fanari and Paspalomiti and then return to Niato by climbing down the ridge of Fanari. An alternatice way to return to Niato is to enter the area of the black pits, hike in this area to get a close look of this eere place and then head northeast to fall on the E4. You can follow the E4 to return to Niato.

Kastro means Castle in greek and the name was given because on a very clear day, standing on the peak, one can see Heraklion city, which was called Castle by the people of Sfakia.
