How to make road transportation more sustainable? The Fraunhofer IMWS, together with Daimler Truck AG, ElringKlinger AG, ThermHex Waben GmbH, ENGEL Austria GmbH, and Edevis GmbH, developed an innovative thermoplastic sandwich molding process. The key: a lightweight honeycomb core with fiber-reinforced thermoplastic cover layers, enabling strong yet ultra-light components. Using a truck storage compartment cover as a prototype, we proved that material-efficient, durable parts can be produced fully automated, reducing weight, material use, and CO₂ emissions.
