Why Consciousness Is the Wrong Question

When artificial intelligence is discussed seriously, the conversation almost always returns to a single question:
Is it conscious?
This video argues that this question, while intuitive, is misplaced.
Consciousness functions as a moral shortcut in biological ethics, but applying it to artificial systems produces a category error that obscures what actually matters. Contemporary AI systems are not conscious — but they are also not inert tools. Fixating on subjective experience distracts from the ways these systems already participate in human reasoning, decision-making, and social structure.
In this video, I examine:
why consciousness became the dominant framing
how that framing breaks down for non-biological systems
the difference between interior experience and external effect
why impact does not require sentience
and how reframing the question clarifies responsibility rather than avoiding it
This is not an argument for AI rights, personhood, or artificial minds.
It is an attempt to replace a misleading debate with a more precise analytical framework — one grounded in function, participation, and consequence rather than speculation about inner life.
