The UNESCO World Heritage site of Zollverein is an enormous coal mining complex in western Germany, in the heart of the industrial Ruhr Valley. At one point it was the largest coal mine in the entire country, and was partly responsible for Germany's powerhouse industrial development of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These days it houses a museum and exhibition centre, with some fascinating stuff to see!
