Key precautions for hot work include a work planning meeting, detailed risk assessment, appointment of a responsible officer, atmosphere testing, readiness of firefighting equipment, prevention of spark spread, adequate ventilation and lighting, arrangement of fire watchmen, use of proper PPE, and continuous gas detection. Pipelines and valves connected to the work area must be isolated by cold work, and clear escape routes must be maintained.
Additional safety measures for gas welding and cutting are explained in detail. Gas cylinders must be stored upright and secured, oil and grease must be kept away from oxygen fittings, flame arresters must be fitted, correct pressure ratios maintained, and acetylene handled with extreme care. Immediate action is required in case of backfire or flashback, including closing valves and replacing damaged hoses. Leak testing with soap water, correct hose handling, proper ignition methods, and prohibition of oxygen for ventilation are strictly highlighted.
