The key performance monitor in a project organization managed according Critical Chain is the portfolio overview called scatter plot. In this diagram you have the complete overview about all projects and how they are evolving.
There are typical patterns in how these scatter plot are changing. And it’s important to understand the source what causes these patterns to react fast and precise to secure the positive effects of Critical Chain. To better understand the cause-and-effect-chains the “Scatter Plot Movie Maker” was designed. It is a small multi project simulation that allows making any experiment without hurting a real company.
Part II "Three Projects Fighting for Resources" - shows already three projects competing for one resource and you can already see how the operational CCPM priorities work.
Content/Learnings:
(1) How to set up a portfolio of projects and define the simulation parameters.
(2) The influence of a constraint is much higher than thought. It the constraint is the first stage of the projects and there is no switching of within a task then it leads to a correctly staggered portfolio after the constraint - whether you want it or not.
(3) This “physical” staggering leads to the situation that downstream the priorities doesn’t change any more – even if a near constraint follows.
(4) After such a “physical” (unwanted) staggering it can happen, that one project is delayed more than others. If you use CCPM operational priority this effect can be reduced. The downstream stages just prefer the project with the worst progress and highest buffer consumption.
