Imagine that you’ve started a home moving company and you want to help people move from one city to another, what would be the best way to transfer them? Asking them to load up all their furniture onto a bus or a train isn’t very efficient, things might get lost or broken. Instead you might rent a van and drive with them to the new city. My video shows off some “transfer techniques” for “polarisation”, polarisation at the atomic level works like the people that want to move. The transfer techniques that I’m working on are like the van that makes it easier for them! We want to make the polarisation transfer as easy as possible, we don’t want to lose anything along the way! I think this looks a bit like magic, you see the polarisation on the left and watch as it disappears before it suddenly appears on the right! If there are problems in the experiment, think of a bump in the road if you were driving along in the van, then optimal control pulses can help patch it up!
