There are primarily 6 maladaptive or faulty thinking styles that are common in people with ocd and anxiety disorders. These are much more than an irrational thought here or there, these are cognitive patterns, schemas or ways of thinking.

The first type of faulty cognition is perfectionism. Perfectionism, is considered a personality trait, and it is a rigid pattern of thinking and behaving. While perfectionism is not a formal diagnosis, it is an indication that a person is more likely to have OCD or OCPD obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

The second type of maladaptive thinking is over-estimating personal responsibility. This is common in people with OCD and health anxiety. It also may explain why people with OCD are so prone to guilt and shame. An inflated sense of responsibility is much more prominent in people with OCD than those with anxiety disorders. In fact, the higher people scored on having a sense of personal responsibility, the higher their severity of OCD.

The third faulty thinking pattern is over estimating threats. I see this in not only my clients with ocd, but those with anxiety disorders, especially those with panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety and health anxiety.

They misinterpret a sensation, or a thought as something threatening, dangerous or unbearable when in reality it may be uncomfortable but not harmful.

The fourth cognition error is called thought/action fusion. And this a process of over estimating the significance and importance of your thoughts. People with this pattern can exhibit magical thinking where they believe that just by thinking about something will make it more likely to happen.

Thought-action fusion is not specific to ocd and is experienced equally in people with anxiety disorders. But, thought action fusion is correlated with negative emotions in people with ocd and is implicated in the maintenance of the ocd cycle.

The fifth faulty thinking process is having an intolerance of uncertainty. Having an intolerance of uncertainty, or unknowing, only seems to impact people in specific areas of their lives, where they feel most vulnerable.

A person with health anxiety might have difficulty tolerating uncertainty in regards to their health, but might be concerned about relationships or work. The area where you want certainty gives you a window into the part of yourself that feels most vulnerable.

And the sixth and final maladaptive cognitive process is the over control of thoughts. This particular faulty thinking pattern is greater in people with ocd compared to people with anxiety disorders.
