中國的舞醒獅文化已有二千年歷史，它就是一種結合了傳統武術和民間信仰的表演藝術。它不僅僅是一種熱鬧的節慶表演，更代表了祈求吉祥、驅邪納福的寓意。2006年，廣東醒獅被列入首批國家級非物質文化遺產。
醒獅開光儀式其實是一個非常傳統、很講究的一個過程。它一般是用來為醒獅注入靈氣，象徵著讓獅子“醒過來”，代表吉祥。開光儀式的內容和過程主要就是有一位主持人（通常是德高望重的人或者師傅）用朱砂、清水等來點睛點獅子的眼睛，讓獅子“開光”。整個過程其實是象徵把靈氣注入，讓這頭獅子變得有靈性。這樣的話，後面的舞獅就會更有精神和寓意。

China’s lion dance culture has a history of over two thousand years. It is a performing art that combines traditional martial arts with folk beliefs. More than just a lively festive performance, it symbolizes the pursuit of good fortune and the warding off of evil. In 2006, Guangdong lion dance was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
The lion awakening (consecration) ceremony is in fact a very traditional and highly ritualized process. It is generally performed to infuse spiritual energy into the lion, symbolizing that the lion has ‘awakened’ and now represents auspiciousness. The content and process of the ceremony mainly involve a host (usually a respected elder or master) using cinnabar or clean water to dot the lion’s eyes, giving it ‘vision.’ The entire process is symbolic of channeling spiritual energy into the lion, making it come alive with spirit. In this way, the subsequent lion dance will carry greater vitality and meaning.
