Information for the most inquisitive minds:
The upper/lower glute nonsense as well as the abduction function of the Gluteus Maximus stems from national certification books. Google parrots that misinformation.
Our advice to personal trainers: Look up the anatomy and physiology of the human body in textbooks for MD students.
E.g., Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body.
As to leaning forward in lunges, split squats, or hip abduction, it does NOTHING WHATSOEVER to the involvement of the Gluteus Maximus in those exercises.
With lunges and split squats, Gluteus Maximus is the target muscle and will perform its full range of motion WITHOUT leaning your torso forward, because Gluteus Maximus DOES NOT attach to your spine, only to your pelvis.
With hip abduction, Gluteus Maximus IS NOT involved, NEVER HAS BEEN, and NEVER WILL BE.
Learn your muscles, their functions, and biomechanics well to avoid being bamboozled by pseudo-specialists.
