Bomb Cyclone looks more likely. The storm we are about experience is likely to undergo bombogenesis right over the state of Michigan.
"The intensification required to classify as "bombogenesis" varies by latitude. At 60 degrees latitude, it is a drop of at least 24 millibars (24 hectopascals) over 24 hours. At the latitude of New York City, the required pressure drop is about 17.8 millibars (17.8 hectopascals) over 24 hours.
Bombogenesis can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as air over warm ocean waters. It is popularly referred to as a bomb cyclone."
So, we're well within those parameters according to models.
This means we'll have very warm air bring brought up from the Gulf, very cold air from the north, and a lot of wind and moisture all swirling together to create a heck of a winter storm for parts of the state and soaking rains for others.
Winds will likely gust over 55-65mph along the lakeshore areas with 45-55mph gusts inland.
Snow will be on the order of 1-2ft across the UP with up to 6-12" in lake effect areas of Northern Lower and about 6" in those snow belts in West Michigan.
More power outages are possible with nearly impossible travel to the north.
