Storytelling and music are natural companions in elementary music education classrooms, and when used together, they can powerfully support both language and musical development. In K–5 classrooms, where students bring a wide range of literacy levels, home languages, and cultural backgrounds, integrating storytelling with music invites every child to contribute their voice and imagination.
In this workshop, we will explore how to use sound stories as a bridge between reading comprehension and music-making. We’ll examine how rhythm, vocal expression, and classroom instruments can be used to bring narratives to life, and how these activities can be aligned with ELA standards.
Participants will learn to create and adapt sound stories that reflect their students’ lived experiences while building foundational music skills.
Through this lens, we will consider how musical storytelling promotes creativity, self-expression, and cultural connection in the music classroom.
Presented and recorded on January 14, 2026.
