Agasthyakoodam, a UNESCO recognised world heritage ecological hotspot, is believed to be the abode of Sage Agasthya, the creator of Tamil language and Kalaripayattu martial arts form. In Tamil, the peak is called Podhigai and in Buddhist traditions it is the mountain of Avaloketeswara.
Every year, a few thousands undertake the tough trek up the incredibly beautiful Sahyadri (Western Ghats) to reach the stunning peak, the second highest in Kerala, from which the three rivers Karamana, Neyyar and Tamraparni originate. Rich with unique and endemic flora and fauna, the route traverses diverse landscapes like Ezhu Madakku (seven bends) Pulmeedu (grasslands), Muttidichantheri (Shola forest) etc, making the journey challenging as well as spiritual. Usually the trek takes three days to peak and back with overnight stay at Athirumala base camp.
