In the quiet opening of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 2.7, the current of divine remembrance begins to flow. Śukadeva Gosvāmī turns the mind of the listener toward the Lord who descends again and again, like rain upon a forgotten earth.
These verses softly declare:
Whenever dharma trembles and the living beings wander in pride and forgetfulness, the Lord appears — not bound by karma, but moved by compassion. He takes forms divine, walks among men, protects the surrendered, and shatters the arrogance of the godless. Thus history becomes sanctified by His footprints.
Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the hidden jewel within these verses — that the Lord’s avatāras are not legends for curiosity, but ladders for meditation. By hearing the incarnations of the Lord, the heart is cleansed, remembrance awakens, and devotion takes root. The Bhāgavatam teaches that the Supreme is not distant or void — He is personal, active, and endlessly merciful.
Another secret shines here: the Lord does not descend because He must, but because He loves. His appearances are invitations — calling the conditioned soul back to its forgotten home.
In this lecture, we enter the doorway of avatāra-kathā:
Not to collect stories, but to awaken vision.
Not to analyze the Lord, but to remember Him.
Hear with humility.
Hear with longing.
And the Lord who descends through the ages may descend into the heart.
