The Ortler, at 3,905 meters, is the highest peak in South Tyrol and one of the most iconic summits in the Eastern Alps. Its vast glaciers and striking silhouette make it unmistakable. For me and my family, the Ortler holds a special place: My grandfather first climbed it in the 1960s and inspired my love for mountaineering.
Our ascent began in Sulden, passing the Tabarettahütte where we enjoyed a break, before heading to the historic Julius-Payer-Hütte (Rifugio Julius Payer) at 2,802 meters. On summit day, we tackled a rocky ridge climb in the early morning, followed by a stunning glacier ascent under clear, perfect weather conditions. From the summit, we enjoyed the mountain panorama with peaks such as Königspitze, Monte Zebrù, Weißkugel, Similaun, and Piz Bernina.
