ABOUT JIM CROCE & BAD BAD LEROY BROWN

Jim Croce wrote "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" based on a soldier he met while serving in the Army. The character was a composite of tough guys Croce had encountered, but the name came from that one unforgettable soldier.

The song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1973, becoming Croce's biggest hit. Its playful storytelling and memorable characters - Leroy with his diamond rings and Cadillac, the jealous husband - made it instantly classic.

Tragically, Jim Croce died in a plane crash on September 20, 1973, just two months after "Leroy Brown" topped the charts. He was only 30 years old. In his short career, he created some of American music's most beloved story-songs.
