Female psychopaths commit crimes across multiple categories. Other female inmates largely have only one offence type in their history. And psychopathic offenders’ crimes are more often motivated by power, dominance or personal gain than for non-psychopathic females. Female psychopaths are also more likely to repeat-offend than those without psychopathic tendencies. Many of these traits apply to male psychopaths too. But there are differences. In terms of occurrence rates, studies show female inmates with psychopathy make up 11-17% of the overall prison population, compared to their male counterparts at 25-30%.
Psychopathy is a disorder characterized in part by shallow emotional responses, lack of empathy, impulsivity, and an increased likelihood for antisocial behavior (Cleckley, 1941; Hare, 1996). Psychopaths are responsible for an inordinate proportion of crime committed (Kiehl & Hoffman, 2011), and their conning, manipulative interpersonal style typically has a broad, destructive impact on the individuals’ life, work, and relationships.
Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist (PCL), now in its revised form (PCL-R; Hare, 2003), remains the most widely used psychopathy assessment tool for institutionalized samples. Reliable measurement of the construct instigated an escalating number of investigations dedicated to defining psychopathy in more empirical ways. As such, this disorder can now be described in fairly specific neurobiological terms, which includes dysfunction in parts of the brain responsible for utilizing emotional responses, such as responding to cues indicating potential for punishment, in the modification of ongoing behavior.
