Описание: Prof. Randy Schekman, Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California, Berkeley and co-recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine, delivered a fascinating lecture about his inspirational scientific journey. He narrated how his childhood curiosity for understanding the unknown, led him to persistently pursue his parents to buy him a microscope, which he has now donated to the Nobel museum in Sweden. Prof.Schekman then led us back in time and told us how he, along with his many graduate students and postdocs in Berkeley, have, over the past three decades, virtually deciphered the fundamentals of eukaryotic membrane traffic using a genetic and biochemical approach. Many of the genes that guide this process were discovered by his lab in Baker’s yeast, which shares an export mechanism conserved over a billion year of evolution. And human diseases have been found in the same genes that control secretion in Baker’s yeast.Interestingly, his seminal work in basic science is now been extensively used by the biotech industry to exploit yeast as a production platform for the secretion of human proteins such as insulin. Prof.Schekman emphasized the importance of rigorously pursuing basic scientific questions out of simple curiosity.
