After lunch on Saturday 23rd September, one of the final stages of the restoration of ex-CIÉ Wickham railcar No. 713 was completed, with the railcar heading down the North Line for brake tests.
Clearly we knew the brakes worked, and worked well before we tried this! We needed to take the railcar to various speeds, apply full brakes when we passed a marker (we used a W sign for this), then get the measuring wheel out to record the distance it took to stop. This was done at 25mph, 15mph and 10mph. Speeds on the speedometer were also cross-referenced with a GPS speedo.
We then repeated this for 10mph on a falling gradient, and finally 5mph using the handbrake instead of the vacuum brakes. Suffice to say this railcar is very, very good at stopping.
As well as forming part of our vehicle acceptance process, these speeds and stopping distances are recorded so we can compare braking each year during full inspection, to ensure braking performance does not degrade.
Oh, and on top of all the above, this was FUN!
