The 

Immaculate Conception Church

 at Pullichira, Kottiyam, is a renowned Marian pilgrimage center and one of the most ancient churches in the Kollam diocese. 

Description

History & Beliefs: The church's history dates back to the 16th century. The original structure was built by the Portuguese in 1572, following a local belief that a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, known locally as "Pullichira Mathavu" or "Kizhaku Nokki Amma" (Mother who faces East), washed ashore in a box after saving a Portuguese ship from a storm in 1520. This original, beautifully carved wooden altar and the sacred statue have been preserved in the new church building, which was constructed in 1974.

Architecture & Ambiance: Situated in a scenic location on the banks of the Pullichira Lake, the church is noted for its architectural grandeur and tranquil spiritual ambiance. It offers a serene haven for meditation and prayer.

Pilgrimage & Festivals: The church was declared a Marian pilgrimage shrine in 2004. Its major event is the annual 10-day feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, held every year in December, which attracts thousands of devotees of all faiths. A unique offering associated with the church is 'Palayum kayarum' (an image offering) and 'Uppum Mulakum' (salt and pepper) for skin ailments, as well as the 'rolling on the sand' procession ritual during the feast.
