In general, nothing in dentistry should ever hurt if the patient is numbed properly. Despite horror stories, root canal therapy should not be a painful experience after adequate anesthesia is achieved.

In regards to post-operative pain, most patients generally experience a mild soreness of the root canal treated tooth that is similar to a bruise.

Severe pain is not at all a common post-operative complication, and when it does occur, it happens only because the tooth before treatment was severely infected and inflamed to an extreme extent.

Take comfort in the fact that root canal therapy generally neither hurt during nor after the procedure.
