In this episode of Multispecies Diaries, I filmed Boncuk and Jinx lying on the bed, their bellies rising and falling almost(!) in synchrony. The camera lingers on this quiet choreography of breath—a fragile rhythm that is both ordinary and profound.
When two beings breathe side by side, their inhalations and exhalations sometimes fall into alignment, sometimes drift apart, and then return again. In this subtle oscillation, relation itself becomes perceptible: not as a spoken dialogue or a visible gesture, but as the shared temporality of lungs filling and emptying together.
For Boncuk and Jinx, this moment may be nothing more than rest before sleep—or perhaps it is also something else. To observe them breathing together invites speculation: maybe intimacy, coexistence, or trust are quietly taking form here, or maybe we are simply projecting these onto their bodies. Breath, usually overlooked as mere physiology, thus opens a space of uncertainty—where relational possibilities emerge, without needing to be fixed or fully known.
And what about us? How often do we notice the rhythms of our own breathing, or the quiet synchronies we share with others—human or otherwise? If breath is always already relational, what forms of connection might we be missing in our daily lives?
