Records of the first Olympic Games date back to Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. — where a cook won the only event: a 192-meter race. The Roman Empire then conquered Greece in mid-2nd century B.C., and while the games continued every four years, their quality declined. In 393 A.D., Emperor Theodosius I called for a ban on all “pagan” festivals, ending the competition after nearly twelve centuries. The games returned in Athens in 1896 with thirteen nations and events including swimming, cycling, and fencing. The Olympics became known as an international event in 1924 when they were held in Paris, and popularity grew with the first-ever televised games: Berlin 1936. Today, the Olympics are considered the world's most prestigious sporting event — hosting more than 200 nations and thousands of athletes.
