The Kidult Crisis: What Buying Expensive Toys Reveals About Your Career

The traditional toy industry has found a highly profitable new target. The adult with disposable income. It is the "Kidult" phenomenon. Global sales in the sector are being driven exclusively by adults spending hundreds of dollars on Lego blocks and collector items.

The Object is the Same, the Subject Changed:

This is the fatal trap of nostalgia. You clearly remember the emotion of wanting a video game at 10 years old and having no money. You buy the video game at 40 to feel that emotion again. But the emotion was never in the plastic. It lived in the scarcity, in the anticipation, and in the innocence of that specific version of you that existed in the past. The object delivered by the mail is the same, but the person opening the box has changed forever.

The Connection to Your Career:

This applies entirely to your professional life. We spend our lives dreaming about what is ahead. The next job title, the next promotion, the next salary. When you get there, the satisfaction lasts for a few weeks and you are already looking at the next target.

The problem with living focused on the professional you want to be tomorrow is that you lose the absolute chance to live, learn, and develop in the only time that actually exists: today. The job you dreamed of ten years ago does not have the same flavor when you arrive, because you have changed.
