The town has several claims to fame, including:

Captain Cook:
Whitby was the home of the famous explorer Captain James Cook. He started his seafaring career in Whitby, working for a local shipping company, and his ship, the Endeavour, was built in the town.

Dracula:
Whitby is also famous for its association with Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by the town's dramatic cliff scenery and the ruins of Whitby Abbey.
