-Bhagat Surdas Ji is one of the most respected saints and poets of India, remembered for his deep devotion to Lord Krishna and his heartfelt spiritual poetry. He is also among the 15 Bhagats whose hymns are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. His life and writings reflect pure love, devotion, and surrender to the Divine.
Early Life
Bhagat Surdas Ji was born in the village of Runkata near Agra, Uttar Pradesh in the early 16th century (around 1483 CE).
He was born blind, but this physical blindness never stopped his spiritual vision. Instead, his disability led him to a life of deep devotion and meditation.
From childhood, he showed signs of being absorbed in divine remembrance.
Spiritual Journey
Bhagat Surdas Ji became a devoted saint of the Bhakti Movement, which emphasized devotion (bhakti) to God over rituals and caste distinctions.
He is considered a follower of Sant Vallabhacharya Ji, a Vaishnav saint, who guided him on the path of devotion to Lord Krishna.
His poetry, especially in Braj Bhasha, beautifully describes the childhood and divine plays (leelas) of Krishna, evoking deep love and devotion.
Teachings
Surdas Ji’s bani (hymns) reflects humility, surrender, and equality.
His writings often stress that God resides in every heart and that devotion is the true path to liberation.
He condemned pride, ego, and worldly attachments while uplifting the importance of Naam (God’s Name).
Contribution to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji
In Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, there are two shabads of Bhagat Surdas Ji included.
These hymns express his longing for union with the Divine and highlight the greatness of God’s grace.
Through Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, his bani was preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji as eternal truth.
Legacy
Bhagat Surdas Ji is remembered as one of the greatest poets of the Bhakti era.
His compositions, collectively known as Sursagar, are filled with devotional songs for Lord Krishna, though not all were written by him.
His humility and surrender continue to inspire seekers on the path of love and devotion.
