After the Canada Day celebrations wind down with the Cowichan Pipes and Drums band , Kathy White Highland Dancers & the hamburgers & the cake were finished
— I head into the museum to check out one of the BC Forest Discovery Centre’s fascinating attractions : its G Scale model railway !
🚂 G SCALE MODEL TRAINS
Tristan gives me a closer look at the impressive G Scale model train layout , which is considerably larger than the more familiar HO Scale used by many model railroad enthusiasts , including myself when I was a kid !
G Scale trains are known for their larger size , which allows manufacturers and model railroad builders to incorporate impressive levels of detail.
The layout features multiple operating trains , working mechanisms , lights , sound effects and smoke , making this much more than a static model railroad display.
If you're a model railway enthusiast, G Scale fan, train lover or simply interested in how miniature railways recreate the real thing , you'll want to see this impressive display !
🪵 HISTORIC LOGGING EQUIPMENT
Outside the museum, Willie takes me through the history of the Forest Discovery Centre and shows me Drinkwater Station , which was part of the original entrance to the park when it opened in 1966.
We also look at fascinating pieces of historic logging equipment , including the Nicholson debarker shed.
Machinery inside these facilities was used to remove bark from logs before they continued on to the sawmill.
I also discover Ross carriers , unusual looking machines that were used inside sawmills to move lumber from one location to another.
The museum's collection provides an incredible glimpse into British Columbia's forest industry , logging history and railway transportation heritage.
🚂 ANTIQUE STEAM LOCOMOTIVE & SOMENOS LAKE TRESTLE
Then the excitement really begins !
I head outside to capture the historic steam train as it travels along the Forest Discovery Railway Tracks and travels across the Somenos Lake trestle !
I even ran alongside the railway trying to catch the locomotive approaching me , but it was moving too fast !
You'll see the steam engine from the outside , crossing the trestle and passing historic logging equipment , water infrastructure and railway stations.
🔥 MY FIRST-EVER RIDE INSIDE A STEAM LOCOMOTIVE!
But the biggest surprise of the day comes when I'm invited into the front of the locomotive with Fred , Simon and Peter.
For the first time in my life, I'm actually riding inside a real steam locomotive cab!
I get an up close look at how the locomotive operates, including the oil-fired furnace, boiler, water level, injector, boiler-pressure gauge, throttle, brakes, Johnson bar, bell and whistle.
The crew explains how the locomotive requires teamwork between the people operating the engine and maintaining the fire, water and braking systems.
I even get to experience the locomotive starting its journey while standing right inside the cab !
And yes … riding the locomotive & hearing the steam whistle and bell from inside the locomotive was absolutely incredible ! 🚂
This was one of those unexpected travel experiences that makes me say :
You never know where we’ll be or who we’ll see !
