We do NOT use a pressure washer, nor any form of pressure for cleaning cedar!! Everything is done using garden hose pressure to produce the desire results, which are clearly seen in this video.
What You Need To Know About Your Cedar Roof!
This is an incredible roofing type. It provides insulation, also known as R-value, that far exceeds that of slate, metal, rubber and yes, even asphalt shingles. Not to mention its life-span! A cedar roof can last more than 50 years with proper maintenance.
On its own, cedar will not deteriorate. They have a natural preservative in them which prevent them from rotting. Because of this, a cedar roof will last for decades if properly maintained. However, due to the conditions of the weather, they will deteriorate over time.
What’s Eating Your Roof?
One of the most common growths found on all wood is what is known as brown rot and black rot fungi. As these fungi grow, they begin to break down the structure of the wood. Also found with this fungi will be what is known as wood mold. Wood mold will cause the shakes to also have a green tint. Brown rot and black rot fungi also promotes other types of growth such as moss and lichen, causing further damage. If these things are allowed to grow, they will deteriorate the shakes before their time. A routine cleaning will give your roof a full life.
UV rays are also a factor in the deteriorating process. Cedar naturally has 3% of oil in it, which is the reason that it does not deteriorate own it’s on. Overtime, UV rays cause this oil to dry out and the shakes lose their ability to resist water. They lose their ability to expand and contract as well, and will cause them to begin to crack. Our cleaning solution contains oil that works to re-hydrate the shakes and restore its functionality and flexibility.
How Do I Know When My Cedar Roof Needs Cleaning?
If your roof has a silvery color, your roof is fine. But if it shows a brown or black color, has moss, or shows white spots (lichen), then you know that your roof is in need of a cleaning. Typically, your roof needs to be cleaned every 5 – 10 years.
The Process
On the day we come out to clean your cedar roof, we begin by protecting all foliage. We have developed a run off system for this specific purpose. The roof is then sprayed using our specially formulated solution, designed specifically for this roofing type, which kills any moss, mold, lichen, and/or fungi. The solution is applied at only 40-60 psi (about a garden hose pressure). Once the solution has done its job, we use our low pressure rinse system using only a garden hose to gently rinse away all remains. We then apply one more coat of solution and leave it. This allows the oil to seep into the pores of the wood and re-hydrate the cedar shakes.
We are authorized and trained in the soft wash process by Bruce Sullivan and are the authority of Cedar Roof Cleaning for North Carolina and along the east coast.
The Results
After we are done cleaning your roof, the shakes will be back functioning as they should. This cleaning will last on average for 7 years. Our process also restores beauty back to your home. We can ensure that your roof will take on a beautiful honey tone.
What NOT to do to a Cedar Roof!
Never let anyone use a pressure washer on your roof. A cedar roof is installed by first laying out a layer of felt paper. The shakes are then laid over top of the felt. The felt protects the house and the shakes protect the felt. Pressure washing a roof puts your house at high risk for leaks, as pressure washing easily tears through the felt. In addition to this, pressure washing removes a layer of wood cells from the shakes, causing them to fail prematurely. The workers are also required to harness themselves off and walk on the roof to perform the pressure washing service. The process destroys the shakes and is not recommended by members of the cedar shake and shingle bureau. We have adopted a process that is done all from a ladder using a soft wash process. This soft wash method only requires the pressure of a simple garden hose. It is safe, and effective for maintaining the life of your roof. Never allow anyone to apply a sealer to a cedar roof as cedar needs to breathe. A stain can be applied for aesthetic purposes, but we only recommend stains that do not contain a sealant. The only needed additive is an oil to re-hydrate the shakes, which is already in our proprietary solution.
