The School of Geosciences has a range of instruments to measure different things, at different conditions. We have porosimeters and permeameters, an apparatus for recording ultrasonic velocities (as a proxy for seismic velocities), and two apparatus for rock deformation.
The triaxial machine, funded by the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (part of the SFC), can deform rock samples at physical conditions equivalent to about 10 km depth, including temperatures of up to 200 degrees C.
