The Concorde was co-developed by Aerospatiale, a joint venture by Airbus (then Sud aviation), and BAE systems (then BAC). It's first flight was in 1969, and it entered service in 1976. The Concorde was was and still is (as of April 24th 2021) one of only supersonic passenger jets to ever fly, and the most successful supersonic airliner in history. The Concorde could reach speeds of up to Mach 2.04, and could cross the Atlantic Ocean in 3 hours. That luxury and speed didn't come cheap, as a flight between New York and London would cost ~$12,000, ~$17,000 in todays money. The aircraft was propelled by BAE built turbojet engines with after burners. The aircraft featured an iconic swept-back delta wing, and due to the large size of the nose cone, pilots could not see over the nose when landing. The solution to this was to make it so that the nose cone could adjust to point down 45 degrees, allowing the pilots to see the runway. Due to the sonic boom created by the aircraft, governments banned the aircraft from going supersonic within 10 miles of land. This was the first nail in the coffin for the Concorde. On July 25th, 2000 a Air France Concorde taking off from Paris Charles de Gaulle heading to JFK struck a piece of metal, causing it's tire to explode. The debris from the tire hit that wing, and caused fuel to start leaking through the engines and out the wing. Another piece of rubber hit wires in the landing gear well, causing sparks. This resulted in The engine exploding into a fireball, and causing Air France flight 4590 to crash into a hotel. All passengers on the Concorde and 4 on the ground were killed. This was the second nail in the coffin. The final two nails came simply with Concorde's age, having already served longer than most airplanes types ever had. And with the 9/11 disaster, the aviation industry took a hard beating. This lead to the Concorde being retired on October 24th, 2003 by British Airways and Air France. Before the crash in 2000, many airlines wanted in on the Concorde. TWA, Pan Am, Singapore Airlines all wanted to buy the Concorde. Although gone, Concorde will be forever recognized as one of the most iconic planes in history.
