Vietnam War.
First scene - May 23rd 1967. ARVN D-M-Z operations. Asian GI's walking in a line in the killing fields. Aeroplane flying towards ground, approaches treetops, flies over treetops and forwards. GI's in killing fields walking about. Close up of injured Vietcong officer, bandaged head sitting on the floor. GI's stand behind him. a GI offers him a cigarette. Vietcong officer shakes his head indicating no. Close up of army gear, box of bullets. Close up of guns. Blank screen. Negative! A Vietcong officer speaks. A western woman writes in a book. See two western men sitting and talking. Blank screen. See two American men on a boat. two Vietnamese men are rowing. See GI's. See GI's on a boat. Two GI's on land fixing a boat. A group of GI's push a large raft into the water. Their commander is giving orders. GI's pulling a raft onto land. GI's in a canoe-like boat. See a GI on land to the corner speaking. A broken bridge. GI looking at it (destroyed by Vietcong 13th May 1967). Blank screen. Interview with an officer. Cannot hear what he is saying. Another GI speaks. He describes how he and another GI had to play dead to save themselves from being killed by the Viet Cong. He recounts how they had to lie still and hold their breath while the VC went through their pockets and kicked and beat them to see if they were alive. Says that he had to take a breath and that one of the VC thought he saw his chest move. The VC lifted the GI shirt and placed his had on his back to see if he was breathing. The GI said he held his breath and managed to fool the VC into believing he was dead. The two GI's are amazed they were not shot. See camp behind. Former officer speaks again. See the interviewer (GI's backs to the camera). Interviewer asks "How do you feel about this war now?" Blank screen. GI's bending down looking at a dead body. GI's in a trench, one is on a speaker, another slides his body into a hole, another helps him. Close up of the hole. The GI at the other end squeezes himself out. The two others greet him, one hands him a gun. They speak. They walk out of forest area. Commander in interview. Camera focuses on maps that he is holding. 23rd January 1967. South Vietnam Ho Bo Woods. US troops find important charts in tunnel. A Vietnamese man speaks in a court-like room. (debate) Saigon. Marshall Ky ends debate on new constitution. He walks offstage and back to his seat. GI's in car driving towards camera. Close up of sign "Headquarters 1 Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, United States Army. Col. Charles A Jackson." SGM James C Gilbert, Marshall Ky and his wife visit US troops. Walk out of car, he decorates officers for Son Houston operation (???) Blank screen. An officer in interview, - hard to believe what he is saying. He recounts how they (GI's) would enter a village, make everyone sit in a circle on the ground and then choose one man to be tied to a tree and tortured (goes into detail). The officer says they did this to find out if they villagers knew anything about the Viet Cong. GI's walking about woodlands and searching through rubble. GI being interviewed - They found a stash of food left by the VC. Interviewer asks questions.
