I've spent countless days fishing the Iowa Driftless trout streams. One thing can be said for the fish you can expect to catch....CONSISTENCY!
The Iowa DNR stocks rainbow trout in these streams in a "catchable" size that usually ranges from 8 to 11 inches. They also stock 4 inch fingerling brown trout in many of these same streams.
Rainbow trout grow slowly in the Iowa streams once stocked. Evidenced by the size of the holdover trout caught in the spring before the next year's stocking schedule begins. I've caught thousands of fish in a variety of the Iowa streams and seldom break the 12" mark on a rainbow.
The fish I catch in this video measured just short of 17 1/4" and had perfect fins and color, indicating it had been surviving wild in Waterloo Creek for several years after being released from the Decorah trout hatchery.
Fly fishing for trout in the Midwest is fun and is great practice for the "real thing" out West. But, I never expected to catch one of my best Rainbows ever here in Iowa, and on my own hand-tied Copper John fly to top it off.
I hope you enjoy the video and you're inspired to get out and give it a try!
Good Fishing!
