Recorded video of National Webinar on Glimpses of Ancient Indian Mathematics organized by Maths Aspirants Groups, held on November 7, 2021.
Resource Person: Dr. Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay , Associate Professor of Mathematics, Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur, University of Calcutta, West Bengal, India.
India has had a long legacy of extraordinary scholars who had immense knowledge about mathematics, astronomy and other disciplines. Even though, its reputation suffers from Euro-centric bias of history, India has a rich mathematical heritage.
Mathematics on the Indian subcontinent has a rich history going back over 3,000 years and thrived for centuries before similar advances were made in Europe. Indian mathematicians made remarkable contributions to the study of trigonometry, algebra, arithmetic and negative numbers among other areas. Perhaps most significantly, the decimal system that we still employ worldwide today was first seen in India. Ancient and medieval Indian mathematical works, all composed in Sanskrit, and mainly expressed as sutras. In the seventh century work, Brahmasputha Siddhanta, the astronomer Brahmagupta introduced rules for solving quadratic equations and also demonstrated rules for working with zero and negative numbers.
A later landmark in Indian mathematics was the development of the series expansions for trigonometric functions by the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics, founded by Madhava of Sangamagrama in the 1300s. Their remarkable work, completed two centuries before the invention of calculus in Europe, provided what is now considered the first example of a power series, apart from geometric series.
This webinar shed light into these ideas and helped the young generation to realise and appreciate the great culture and tradition of Ancient India in the area of Mathematics.
