#walkingtour of King Hussein’s Palace - #jerusalem (Tel el-Ful) (تل الفول - بيت حنينا)
I’ve driven past this massive structure on the hill a thousand times, always wondering what it looks like from the inside.
This time, I finally decided to hike up to Tel el-Ful in Beit Hanina to explore what was meant to be the summer palace of King Hussein of Jordan.
If you’re not familiar with the story, construction on this palace started in the 1960s. It was designed to be
a masterpiece, but everything came to a sudden halt during the Six-Day War in 1967. Since then, it’s been standing
there like a "royal skeleton" overlooking the Jerusalem skyline—frozen in time for over 50 years.
In this walking tour, I’m taking you through the massive stone arches and the empty halls.
There’s something incredibly powerful about walking through a place that was built for royalty but never saw a single guest.
It’s a mix of grand architecture and raw, unfinished concrete that creates a vibe unlike anywhere else in the city.
The Scale: You don’t realize how huge this place is until you’re standing right in the middle of it. The arches are massive and the craftsmanship, even in its unfinished state, is impressive.
The 360° View: This has to be the best viewpoint in Jerusalem. You can see everything from the mountains of Samaria and Ramallah to the Old City and the Moab mountains in Jordan on a clear day.
The Layers of History: The palace actually sits on top of "Tel el-Ful," which is identified as the biblical Gibeah, the capital of King Saul. Walking here feels like walking through different eras all at once.
I tried to capture the atmosphere of the place—the silence, the wind, and the sheer history of the site. It’s a bit of a hidden gem that many people see from the road but few actually visit.
What do you think should happen to this place? Should it be preserved as a monument, or should someone finally finish the job? Let me know in the comments!
