The UNESCO World Heritage site of Syracuse is a historic city in south-eastern Sicily, founded in around 500 BC by Greek colonists. It was one of the most important Greek colonies in the Mediterranean Sea, and even briefly rivalled Athens itself in importance. Its history is a microcosm of Sicilian history as well, with obvious influences from Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and finally baroque buildings from the reconstruction efforts after a 17th century earthquake. Come with me for a wander through this fascinating city!
