The body of an 11-year-old girl, who went missing a day ago, was recovered in the Baruipur area in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, following which a mob lynched a man on rape-murder charges, police said.

According to PTI reports, the girl’s body was found stuffed in a sack in the Surjyapur Haat area, triggering a protest by locals who blocked the Baruipur-Joynagar Road, burnt tyres, and damaged a few police vehicles, demanding the arrest of the accused.

A man was beaten to death by angry locals on accusations of his involvement in the girl’s death, Inspector General of Police, Kankarprasad Barui said.

According to MP Saayoni Ghosh's tweet on the social media platform X, an 'SIT has been constituted to investigate the matter'. She further added that she had spoken to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and 'he has assured that he is personally monitoring the situation. He is in touch with the bereaved family and that the culprits will not be spared & justice will be done expeditiously. '

The police said four people have been arrested in connection with the girl’s death.

Urging the protesters to lift the road blockade, IGP Barui announced that everyone associated with the crime would be arrested and would receive the maximum punishment following a trial, according to PTI reports.

Stating that police raids are underway to nab the culprits, the IGP said, “No one will be spared.” The body of the girl was thereafter allowed by the protesters to be sent for a post-mortem examination. The blockade was lifted following the IGP’s assurance.

The body has been sent to Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination, the police said, adding that the cause of the and whether any sexual assault was committed on her would be known once the autopsy report is released.

A police officer said the girl had gone missing in the afternoon after leaving home to buy a gift for her friend’s birthday. Family members of the girl alleged that four people had forcibly taken her away, according to PTI reports.

Meanwhile, TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee is expected to visit Baruipur in the wake of the alleged rape incident. However, the All India Trinamool Congress alleged she is under house arrest. In a post on X, they wrote quote unquote 'Mamata Banerjee wanted to visit Baruipur. Upon learning this, a massive deployment of police personnel and barricades was put in place outside her residence to prevent her from leaving.'
