Footage of the swearing in of members of Nigeria's Parliament, the first to exist since the military coup of January 1966.

The opening of parliament had been postponed for a week under a new amendment which allowed the President to issue the proclamation for opening and dissolving the State House of Assembly. This gave the newly-elected civilian President, Dr. Alhaji Shehu Shagari, time to rally the support he needs in both houses.
There are ninety-five members of the Senate and 449 members in the House of Representatives. There is one woman member.
Inside the House of Parliament the members take their seats to await their turn to take oaths of membership and allegiance before the clerk of the Assembly, Alhaji Gidado Idris. They also elected the President of the Senate, Dr. Joseph Wayas.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Edwin Umezieke is sworn in.
As Mr. Umezieke took the chair, Nigeria embarked on its Second Republic. The first republic lasted from 1963 to 1966 under Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The Second Republic's slogan is "One Nation, One Destiny".
