Stratton Mountain Backpacking

On this trip, a few colleagues from work and I backpacked overnight in Stratton Vermont. We hiked a loop from the Stratton Mountain Trailhead to the top of Stratton mount where we had lunch and enjoyed the 360 degree view from the fire tower. AT 3,940 feet tall, Stratton Mountain is the highest peak in the Southern Green Mountain Forest and Appalachian Trail in Vermont. The fire tower was built in 1934 by the Civilia Conservation Corp. It was on Stratton Mountain that Jame P.Taylor conceived the ideas of a trail form Massachusetts to Canada, which become the Long Trail. Inspired by construction of the Long Trail, Benton MacKaye expanded on Taylor idea to from construct a trail from Georgia to Maine that would be called the Appalachian Trail.

After lunch the group headed north to Stratton Pond, where we explored the Stratton Pond Shelter, but decided to hike on to the Stratton Pond Campsite at the far west end of Stratton Pond. We set up camp and enjoyed a hit meal before returning for the night.

The next morning I got up to watch the sunrise, made breakfast and packed up. From here we headed back to the east end of the pond where we headed out to the cars, this time taking a Stratton Pond Trail back.
