Is Time Under Tension Important For Muscle Growth?
http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/train...
Although the standard training method has always been to count out the number of reps performed per set, the "time under tension" method (also known as "TUT") disregards rep count altogether and focuses on the total length of time the set lasts instead.
You'll hear varying guidelines for this, but as a general rule, TUT gives the following ranges for specific training goals:
1-20 seconds = Strength
30-60 seconds = Hypertrophy
70-100 seconds = Endurance
But is time under tension important? What's the real deal on the issue of time under tension vs. reps?
All in all, I would recommend that you forget about the concept of TUT altogether. As long as you're training within the standard hypertrophy rep range of about 5-12 reps per set, you'll ultimately be landing within the recommended time ranges for most sets anyway.
Even if you do happen to miss by a few seconds, keep in mind that time under tension is not a "research proven" method by any means and is ultimately just based on anecdote and personal opinion.
TUT basically just tells us something that we already know: very low rep sets will produce greater gains in strength, and very high rep sets will produce greater gains in endurance. Beyond that it doesn't really give us any new information.
Not only is focusing on time under tension vs. reps not necessary as part of your workout, but it may also be counterproductive as well by diverting your focus away from the things that truly matter, such as generating high intensity, using proper rep tempo, utilizing proper form and focusing on progressive overload.
So, is time under tension necessary? My suggestion is to forget about TUT altogether as it really isn't going to help you make any additional gains, but yet may actually negatively affect your progress.
