After reading through my recently purchased copy of Matt Parker's Humble Pi, When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World. I decided to try out the example problem presented on page 179, which is used to demonstrate an error that calculators may be susceptible to.
The question posed is "What would you do if you needed to know how many fortnights there are in seventy-five days?" The process described to produce the error is to divide 75 by 14, then subtract 5, and then multiply by 14, which should give an answer of 5 again.
It seems that all the "scientific" calculators in my collection, until you go back about 40 years, are capable of finding the correct result. I'm confident that the standard 4 function calculators (4bangers) that many people commonly use, would all produce incorrect results, but it seems odd to me that the iPhone calculator app also falls victim to this error, or at least did at the time the book was written.
