In this video we can know about How Linen Fabric is Made, Linen Fabric manufacturing process, from flax to Linen
Linen fabric is made from the flax plant through a multi-step process: harvesting the whole plant, retting (soaking/dewing to break down stalk), scutching (removing woody parts), combing (aligning fibers), spinning fibers into yarn, and finally weaving the yarn into fabric, which is then finished. This natural process transforms tough stalks into durable, breathable linen textiles.
1. Sowing & Harvesting
Flax plants are sown closely to grow tall, then pulled from the roots when mature (about 100 days) to maximize fiber length.
2. Retting (Fiber Separation)
The harvested stalks are left to dry, then "retted" (soaked in water or spread on fields) for weeks, allowing bacteria and dew to break down the pectin holding fibers to the woody core.
3. Processing & Spinning
Scutching: The dry stalks are crushed to break away the woody inner parts (shives).
Combing (Hackling): Fibers are combed to align them and remove short bits, creating long, smooth strands.
Spinning: Fibers are twisted into yarn, often using wet spinning for finer, smoother yarn or dry spinning for thicker, rustic yarn.
Weaving: The yarn is woven on looms, creating different patterns.
Finishing: The fabric may be bleached, dyed, softened, or printed, then goes through quality control before use.
