After World War II, Japanese General Hitoshi Imamura was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Many thought this sentence was light - including Imamura himself. Believing he hadn't truly paid for his actions, he did something unusual: he built a full-size replica prison in his own garden and chose to live in it voluntarily for the rest ofhis life.
For more than two decades, this self-imposed confinement became his way of accepting responsibility, until his death in 1968. This is the story of a general who didn't just serve a sentence - he created one.
