Today’s gem comes from Season 6, Episode 11 of The Bell Telephone Hour, Maria Tallchief and Nicholas Magallanes performing George Balanchine’s “Allegro Brillante” to Tchaikovsky’s Third Piano Concerto.

Mr. Balanchine spoke of Allegro Brillante. “It contains everything I know about the classical ballet in 13 minutes.”

New York City Ballet sums up the ballet.

“Allegro Brillante is characterized by what Maria Tallchief — the ballerina on whom the bravura leading role was created — called "an expansive Russian romanticism."

How She Became Known As Maria Tallchief.

Elizabeth “Betty” Marie Tall Chief. Born - January 24, 1925. Fairfax, Oklahoma – Died April 11, 2013. Chicago, Illinois.

Miss. Tallchief was the first Native American woman to become a ballerina.

She studied ballet under Ernest Belcher and for her high school years with Bronislava Nijinska. She also took the opportunity to study with visiting ballet artists to Los Angeles, such as, David Lichine, Tatiana Riabouchinska and Mia Slavenska.

In fact, it was Miss. Slavenska who arranged an audition for 15 year old Miss. Tallchief with Serge Denham, the Director of Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After the audition Mr. Denham said “She's very good. I'd like to see her after she graduates from high school.”
