The Kia ProCeed is the newest member of the Ceed line-up, trading a little practicality for racy looks

Kia has revealed a production version of the ProCeed concept first shown at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, which takes on the same name for the showroom.

The Kia ProCeed moniker has been used in a different format before – the Pro_Cee’d badge was reserved for the three-door hatchback version of the previous generation model. Here though, the new ProCeed takes on the proportions of a shooting brake wedged between the regular five-door hatchback and the Sportswagon badged estate. It’ll be built alongside those cars at Kia’s Žilina production facility in Slovakia, and only offered in sporty looking GT-Line and GT trim.

Against the tape measure the ProCeed is 4,604mm long and 1,422mm tall, meaning its 5mm longer than the Sportswagon but 43mm lower at its tallest point. The 2,650mm wheelbase remains unchanged compared to its more conventional estate sibling, but it also rides 5mm lower in a bid to give the ProCeed a meaner stance.

Viewed head on it looks like any other member of the Ceed line-up, as all design changes are found in the roofline and the rakishly shaped rear quarter of the car. The tailgate is completed with the latest industry trend – a full width LED light bar. The rear end is rounded off with a new hatch-lid spoiler and an angular lower section for the rear bumper, complete with twin exhaust exits. 17-inch wheels are standard fit on GT-Line models, with 18-inch alloys on the ProCeed GT.

The interior is more or less shared with the rest of the Ceed range, boasting the same layout and seven-inch floating infotainment display in the middle of the dashboard – a larger eight-inch unit is on the options list. Some trim alterations are found though. For example, the ProCeed gets black headlining and the doors get metallic scuff plates. A flat bottom steering wheel is also standard fit. ProCeed GT models are equipped with new sports seats with larger side bolsters, too.

As for space and practicality Kia says that the lower roofline has been offset with a slightly sunken bench, unlocking a bit more headroom. The rear bench is still a 40:20:20 split folding set-up enabling a totally flat cargo bay, while with all seats in place boot space sizes up at 594 litres, down from the 625 litres found in the Ceed Sportswagon.
Kia says that while the basic suspension components are lifted from the Ceed and Ceed Sportswagon, the ProCeed’s setup is unique and a little firmer edged in an attempt to unlock a bit more agility.
While there are only two trim levels, four powertrain options will be available consisting of three petrols and a solitary diesel. The base car gets a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine developing 118bhp and 172Nm of torque, and is offered alongside a 1.4-litre four-cylinder developing 138bhp and 242Nm.
The most powerful option is reserved for the ProCeed GT and is a turbocharged 1.6-litre with 201bhp and 265Nm on tap. The CRDi diesel is also a 1.6-litre unit, featuring 134bhp and 280Nm. All engines are fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic available on all but the 1.0-litre car.
It’ll go on sale in Britain January 2019. Prices should start from around £24,000, with the GT topping the range from around £29,000.
