As a female backpacker and outdoor adventurer, I have often heard people ask: “You’re doing this alone? I could never do that. You’re so brave”. However, the phrase “You’re so brave” implies that stepping out of your comfort zone requires some exceptional bravery.
Perhaps that's because many presume there is something inherently risky or dangerous about solo outdoor adventures for women. Don't get me wrong; it is important to be aware of potential risks and prioritize safety, but I wish people would not amplify these concerns to the point where they perhaps deter women from exploring the outdoors on their own. Solo backpacking (among other adventures), when well-prepared and planned, is a reasonably safe endeavor for just about anyone, regardless of gender. Solo female backpacking is NOT an extraordinary- and almost reckless- feat, achievable only by the exceptionally brave few. Rather, it’s an opportunity to tap into empowerment, self-reliance, and personal growth.
As a solo female adventurer I’m not just “brave”; I’m an individual who embraces the opportunity to connect with nature, test my limits, and discover my inner strength. I plan meticulously, adapt to challenges, and become a confident problem solver. In the words of Rita Mae Brown: “A woman who is free to roam the world alone is unstoppable”
