“He wasn't afraid, he fought. Everyone here is afraid, but he was the only one (who wasn’t). He fought for us, he fought for freedom, he fought for a normal country, for our rights, for our right to live. And we all sit here, unfortunately, surrounded by laws and fear. For me, it's important to at least pay our respects and not be afraid to lay flowers a few times a year.”

STORYLINE:
Two years after Alexei Navalny died in an Arctic penal colony, a group of relatives and supporters gathered at his grave in Moscow to pay tribute to the late opposition leader.
Representatives of foreign embassies also laid flowers at Navalny’s grave early Monday.
On Saturday, the U.K., France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands said European laboratory tests confirmed that Navalny was poisoned with a rare toxin, epibatidine.
They said the toxin, linked to poison dart frogs, does not occur naturally in Russia and argued that Russia had the means, motive and opportunity to administer it.
“Two years have passed, and we already know what he was poisoned with. I think that after some time we will find out who did it. Definitely,” Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, said, next to her son's grave.
"We want for justice to prevail, and for us to know all of their names," she added.
Navalny, who campaigned against official corruption and staged large anti-Kremlin protests as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest political opponent, died in an Arctic penal colony on Feb. 16, 2024, while serving a 19-year sentence that he said was politically motivated.
Russian authorities denied wrongdoing and said Navalny’s death was due to natural causes — a sudden spike in blood pressure and chronic illnesses.
